A Christmas Story - Play, Comedy
(this is not the musical version. No singing or dancing is required)

Show synopsis:

This year, there’s a gift that Ralphie wants more than anything in the world – a Red Ryder 200-Shot Carbine Action Range Model Air Rifle – but his parents don’t seem to think it’s such a good idea. His mother warns him, “You’ll shoot your eye out,” and his father is too busy tinkering with the family’s furnace and evading the dogs from next door to pay much attention. As Christmas draws closer, Ralphie gets increasingly anxious about what surprises (either good or bad) the holiday season will bring.

PARENTS - PLEASE READ
Child/young actors MUST have on stage acting experience. We’re looking for kids who are confident, who are good storytellers, and who are at ease in the company of adults.

Children cast in this production MUST be well behaved.  If a child is cast and it is found that they cannot control themselves around others, the role will be re-cast.

We are searching for two adults that can assist us backstage with watching over the child actors during the show. If you'd like to volunteer, you will receive 2 free tickets for each show to give to anyone you wish.

REHEARSAL REQUIREMENTS:
Rehearsals will start Saturday, October 19th.
Rehearsals will be held Monday, Tuesday, Thursday - 6:30 PM to 9 PM, Saturday - 12 PM to 5 PM.

Additional rehearsals may be added depending on how well the rehearsal process goes. All actors must be available for the days and times of rehearsals. If anyone misses more than three (3) rehearsals, they will be replaced by an understudy.

ALL ACTORS MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ALL DATES THE SHOW RUNS.

DATES AND TIMES OF PERFORMANCES:
December 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 28 - 7:30 pm
December 15, 22, 24, 29 - 2 PM
There is a performance on Christmas Eve.

The following roles will be paid $250 (There is the possibility of a bonus beyond stated pay)

Ralphie Parker - 10 - 13 - The young protagonist. Equal parts dreamer and schemer, Ralphie doesn’t just covet an air rifle, he also knows (or thinks he knows) exactly how to persuade the adults around him that his cause is a righteous one.

Ralph Parker - 30 - 60 - Ralphie’s older, wiser alter ego, functions as the story’s narrator and assumes the roles of the various townspeople who populate the landscape of the play.

Ralphie's Mother - 35 - 50 - a patient parent with firm convictions – in particular, the conviction that her son should not own an air rifle. It takes a lot to ruffle her feathers, but the provocative leg lamp that Ralphie’s father wins in a send-away contest does seem to do the trick.

The Old Man, 40 - 60 - the Parker family’s beleaguered patriarch, is a grumpy, good-hearted father with a penchant for highly original (and to the audience’s ears profanity-free) invective and a deeply held desire to be a winner.

Flick - 10 - 13 - one of Ralphie's friends. He is the unfortunate guinea pig in the infamous frozen-flagpolelicking experiment,. Wise cracking.

Schwartz - 10 - 13 - another of Ralphie's friends. He becomes the scapegoat when Ralphie accidentally utters an unspeakable word.

The following roles will be paid $150 (There is the possibility of a bonus beyond stated pay):

Randy, 8 - 10 - Ralphie's little brother, sure is cute, but getting him to eat his breakfast or don his snowsuit can be a serious headache.

Scut Farkas - 14 - 20 is the schoolyard bully who routinely torments Ralphie and his friends. He has yellow eyes!

Miss Shields - 30 - 60 is Ralphie’s teacher. She’s also an integral component of his campaign for the perfect Christmas gift.

Esther Jane - 10 - 13 - One of Raplhie's classmates. Has an interest in Raphie.

Helen - 10 -13 - another of Ralphie's friends. Helen is something of a child prodigy

The following role will be paid $100 (There is the possibility of a bonus beyond stated pay):

Department Store Santa - 35 - 65 - The "Anti-Santa." Cold, tired of his job. Hates kids.

FOR GENERAL AUDITIONS ONLY

What you need to know about General Auditions:

  • PLEASE COME PREPARED! If you wish to be cast, preparation is the #1 talent we look for.

  • Actors should bring a head shot and resume. Your head shot does not need to be a professional one but we do need a photo of you of some kind (Don't you want is to remember your face?)

  • Straight Play Auditions - Prepare two short contrasting monologues (Comedy & Dramatic), about 2 minutes maximum each.

  • Musical Auditions - Actors are required to prepare and bring a song selection (no more than 90 seconds) with a recorded backing track. No piano will be provided. If you are interested in musicals, please show up with a song to sing with a backing track. Acapella "Happy Birthday" is not what we're looking for.

  • Movement/Dance audition - Be prepared to learn a short dance combination. Please come wearing comfortable clothing that allows freedom of movement. You don't have to be a dancer, but we do want to see how well you move.

  • CALLBACKS - callbacks will be scheduled on an "as needed" basis.

  • Performers of all ethnic, racial and orientation backgrounds are encouraged to audition.
